I never saw a moor
Emily Dickinson
I never saw a moor,
I never saw the sea;
Yet know I how the heather looks,
And what a wave must be.
I never spoke with God,
Nor visited in heaven;
Yet certain am I of the spot
As if the chart were given.
Thoughts:
I love poem because it explains faith in such a powerful and simple way. Faith is not about what we can see, but it is about what we know and believe without sight. She brings in the facts of life such as the sea. We hear of it,but in actuality not many of us have seen the sea and yet we know it is there by what others have told us. With God we know he exist though we have not seen him, because of his word and the testimony of out fellow brothers and sisters. Side note in Dickinson's time traveling was not as easy as it is for us(furthermore she rarely ventured from her home) and she did not have television that would bring the images, live to her. So her concept of the sea was based upon others and faith that it existed.
